Step behind the periscope of a German U-boat and take on the Allied Forces in famous battles across the vast Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

The best-selling submarine series of all time continues with the highly anticipated Silent Hunter: Battle of the Atlantic. For the first time, you can live the life of a submarine captain from a first-person view as you lead your crew in a truly dynamic campaign.

I am going to disregard the need to connect to the internet for my review. My review will be about the game itself and my summary (if you can't be bothered to read the rest) is that this game is too difficult to play (not by game design but by poor deisgn of the mechanics) and full of bugs. It looks beautiful but is frustrating to control and the enemy AI is absolutely abysmal.

Firstly, I am a BIG fan of SH3. SH4 was very good too but not my cup of tea just because I preferred playing as the Germans. I have been eagerly awaiting SH5 in the hope that it would be every bit as good as it's predecessors but with sounds, graphics and AI that today's PCs can cope with. I have been very very disappointed.

On the positive side the game looks awesome with some wonderful weather and environmental effects. The ships and the u-boats look great, there is much more contact with other friendly vessels (including other u-boats). Also you can now walk about inside the u-boat where there are crew memebers to talk to if you wish.

But that is all that is improved over the previous games. Unfortunately the UI has been radically changed for the worse. There is no method of steering the u-boat other than by plotting way-points on a navigational map - very frustrating if you are trying to evade a destroyer. The ability to walk thorugh the sub has become a pain as now you HAVE to walk through the sub to get all the reports you want. Very very frustrating when you're trying to evade a destroyer! In fact there are far too many things to list on here what is wrong with this game. Look on the official SH5 forums, there are plenty of people on there spouting it all off.

It is also very buggy. Certainly it does not appear to have been tested very well but I suspect (hope) these will be rectified with patches. I'm going back SH3. It may not look as good but it is a much more enjoyable experience.

This review has been revised in December 2011, due to improvments made to the game through patches and mods over the last year or so, and also due the removal of the DRM system that everybody has been complaining about.

The DRM (Digital Rights Management) on the original release required you to have a constant, online connection to the Internet, just to play in single player. As you can see from the other reviews here, it was criticised by many for many reasons. Many felt it was an unfair way to treat legimate users of the game, because players suffered disrupted gameplay and the felt controlled and dependent on Ubisoft's servers. Many players felt it infringed on their rights.

Another problem with the original release was with the game itself. It was clearly unfinished and broken, with many bugs and many things not fully implemented. Game design had also suffered in that it was not really a simulation in the spirit of earlier versions in the series, namely Silent Hunter 3, and Silent Hunter 4. Silent Hunter 5 had a lot of instruments, controls and functions stripped from it, giving it a dumbed-down gamey feel, perhaps in an attempt to pander to a broader, more causal market.

I'm pleased to say that the current 1.2 version of the game has now had the invasive DRM removed, and many of the bugs fixed. If the original release had been half as good as version 1.2 is, I'm sure we would not have seen all these complaints! But what has transformed this game more than anything is the work by the "modders" - enthusiasts who modify and add to the original code of the program to produce enhancements. The enhancements provided for SH5 are unbelievably good, significantly improving this game and making it a more serious simulation. Of the series, SH5, patched to 1.2 and modded with the best mods, is a worthy successor to the previous games in the series. And the modifications continue to be developed as I write. One can only wonder at the potential the future now holds for this game.

If you buy this game, which I now recommend, then make sure you join the forum at SUBSIM and download the mods for it. It can be quite confusing knowing which mods to install, because at the moment they are not all integrated into an easy-to-install "mega-mod" but you'll get plenty of help from the forum and everything can be downloaded from there for free.

I have to agree with all the other comments on Silent Hunter 5. Nice graphics, nothing else.

I have all the other versions of Silent Hunter and have found that SH3 with the Greywolves expansion and a few sound track files from subsim is the best version. Why couldn't SH5 have been SH3 and GWX with updated graphics? Why have Ubisoft thought that the sim fans that want to play Silent Hunter now want a Nintendo shoot em up? The game doesn't score for either side. It is not a sim and the people that buy hack and slash games for the Nintendo aren't going to buy this either. The guy/s who made the decisions on, this was the way to take the franchise, should be sacked as this will probably be the end for Silent Hunter.
